Stress & Burnout Therapy in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario

Start working with your body’s energy, rather than pushing against it.

Is It Stress, or Is It Burnout?

Stress is a natural reaction to a challenge. But when stress is unrelenting, it turns into burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. You might be experiencing this if:

  • Ruba Chihabi offers emotional support and therapy for women going through fertility treatments, new motherhood, and postpartum transitions, serving Kitchener-Waterloo and all of Ontario online.

    Chronic Exhaustion

Sleep doesn't fix it. You wake up tired, your body feels heavy, and even small tasks (like replying to a text) feel like climbing a mountain.

  • Therapy with Ruba Chihabi for stress management. In-person sessions in Kitchener-Waterloo or virtual therapy anywhere in Ontario

    Physical Tension

Your body is keeping the score. You have constant headaches, jaw tension (TMJ), digestive issues, or a racing heart that won't slow down.

    Cynicism & Irritability

You feel snapping points of anger over small things. You might feel resentful toward the people you love or cynical about your job.

    The "Superhuman" Trap

You feel guilty whenever you rest. You believe that if you aren't being productive, you are wasting time.

How We Heal Burnout Together

We cannot "self-care" our way out of burnout with just bubble baths. We need to address the root causes of why you feel the need to carry so much.

  • When you are burned out, your body is stuck in "fight or flight." I use somatic-informed tools to help you complete the stress cycle. We will work on practical techniques to signal to your body that you are safe, allowing your heart rate to lower and your muscles to relax.

  • Why do you push yourself so hard? Often, there is a "Manager" part of you that believes your worth is tied to your productivity. Using IFS, we will gently explore these parts. We don't want to silence your ambition, but we want to help this part of you step back so you can rest without guilt.

  • For many children of immigrants or eldest daughters, saying "no" feels dangerous. We will work on setting boundaries that protect your energy. This isn't about being selfish; it's about being sustainable. We will practice clear, kind communication so you can stop over-committing.

  • Burnout often happens when our life doesn't match our values. We will step back and look at the big picture: What do you actually want your life to look like? We will strip away the "shoulds" and expectations to build a life that feels authentic to you.

Therapy That Fits Your Life

I know that reaching out is the hardest step. I strive to make the process as warm and accessible as possible.

Meet Ruba

I know what it feels like to run on adrenaline and fear that if you stop, everything will fall apart. I want to help you put down that heavy weight.

As a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), I specialize in working with professionals and "fixers" who are tired of the hustle. My practice, Intentional Living Psychotherapy, is built on the belief that you do not have to burn out to prove your worth.

  • I Understand the "Hustle": If your drive to succeed is tied to family duty, immigrant sacrifice, or high community expectations, I get it. You won't have to explain why you can't just "relax."

  • Sustainable Solutions: We move beyond temporary quick fixes. We will dig deeper to address the root causes of your stress and regulate your nervous system so you can build a peace that actually lasts.

  • Nervous System Regulation: Burnout isn't just in your head; it lives in your body. We go beyond surface-level coping strategies to help you complete the stress cycle and find a sense of genuine physical calm.

  • Rest Without Guilt: Together, we will work on dismantling the belief that you are only valuable when you are productive. I will help you learn to rest as a necessity, not a reward.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stress Therapy

  • Stress is your body’s natural response to pressure. It can feel intense, but it often eases when the stressful situation passes. Burnout is what can happen when stress becomes chronic and unrelenting, and your system starts to feel depleted instead of “activated.”

In burnout, rest does not feel restorative, and even small tasks can start to feel heavy. You might notice emotional exhaustion, physical tension, irritability, or a sense that you are running on adrenaline just to get through the week.

In therapy, we slow down and look at what your body has been carrying, what keeps the stress cycle going, and what needs to shift so you can move toward sustainable peace rather than survival mode.

  • A helpful question is: “If the pressure lifted for a weekend, would I bounce back?” With stress, people often feel some relief when things calm down. With burnout, the exhaustion tends to linger, even after you rest.

Some common burnout signs include waking up tired, brain fog or difficulty focusing, feeling emotionally flat or easily irritated, and noticing your body is tense or on edge more often than not.

If you are unsure, that is completely normal. You do not need a perfect label before starting therapy. We can sort it out together and create a plan that matches what you are actually experiencing.

  • Burnout can show up differently for everyone, but some very common patterns are:

    • Chronic exhaustion that sleep does not fix

    • Brain fog and reduced focus

    • Physical tension (jaw, headaches, digestive discomfort, racing heart)

    • Cynicism or irritability and a shorter fuse

    • Guilt when resting, like you must earn your right to slow down

Many people tell themselves they just need to push through “one more week,” but the weeks keep coming. If this sounds familiar, you are not weak. Your body is giving you information, and therapy can help you listen to it in a compassionate, practical way.

  • When you are burned out, your body can feel stuck in fight or flight, like it cannot fully power down. Nervous system regulation means learning practical ways to help your body complete the stress cycle and come back to a calmer baseline.

This is not about forcing relaxation or pretending things are fine. It is about giving your body real cues of safety so your muscles can soften, your breathing can settle, and your mind can feel less “wired.”

Many clients find this especially helpful when burnout shows up as insomnia, tension, irritability, or constant mental spinning.

  • You are not doing anything wrong. Burnout often cannot be fixed by surface-level self-care alone. On your stress page, you say it clearly: we cannot bubble-bath our way out of burnout.

In therapy, we look at the deeper drivers, like why you feel you have to carry so much, what you learned about being “the strong one,” and what keeps pulling you back into over-functioning.

Then we build something more sustainable: regulation tools that actually work for your nervous system, boundaries that protect your energy, and a life structure that matches your values rather than constant “shoulds.”

  • Yes. Many high-achievers feel trapped between “I can’t keep doing this” and “I don’t have a choice.” Therapy becomes a place to make sense of the pressure you are under, how it is affecting your body and mind, and what options you realistically have.

We can work on boundary communication, nervous system tools you can use in real time, and the deeper beliefs that keep you over-extending (like tying worth to productivity).

If changing jobs is not possible right now, we focus on what is still within your control so you can feel more stable and less depleted while you navigate the bigger picture.

  • Coping skills are useful, but burnout often needs deeper work too. On your stress page, you frame burnout as something that lives in the body and is shaped by patterns like over-responsibility, over-functioning, and difficulty resting without guilt.

In therapy, we usually do both:

    • practical regulation tools for your nervous system

    • boundary work that changes how much you carry

    • values alignment so your life matches what matters to you, not just what is expected
